Hello, I'm Anke Stoll.
I'm a postdoctoral researcher in Computational Social Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, University of Amsterdam.
My current research traces how human ideology and prejudice shape AI systems in computer vision—such as facial expression classification—and in natural language processing tasks like toxic language detection. Using computational methods, I investigate how bias emerges in these systems and aim to develop fair and accountable approaches for both research and real-world applications.
Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Amsterdam
Since July 2025, I have been a postdoctoral researcher in the Social Psychology Program at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, University of Amsterdam. My project investigates human sources of bias in AI face classification models.
Postdoctoral Researcher, Ilmenau University of Technology
Between April 2023 and July 2025, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computational Communication Science at Ilmenau University of Technology. My research focused on alternative news media and populism, as well as the potentials and risks of artificial intelligence in online public spheres.
Research Associate & PhD Student, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf
Between June 2018 and April 2023, I was a research associate and PhD student in the Department of Political Online Communication at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. During my PhD, I developed machine learning approaches for communication science research and created online moderation tools to detect harmful content in online discourse. In June 2025, my doctoral thesis titled Machine Learning for the Automated Content Analysis of Incivility in Online Discussions was awarded the 2025 ICA Computational Methods Division Dissertation Award.
Studies in Communication and Media Science – Leipzig, Münster, and Zurich
In 2014, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Science at the University of Leipzig. From 2014 to 2018, I completed my Master’s studies in Communication Science at the University of Münster. In 2016, I was a visiting scholar at the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ) at the University of Zurich.
